huercal overa

Huercal Overa is the result of the fusion of two medieval villages, Huércal and Overa. This busy market town is situated approximately 20 minutes from Mojacar with easy reach to the connecting maotorway. Sitting between two branches of the Almanzora river, it is the largest town in a thriving agricultural district that is largely dependant for its prosperity on the lead mining of the surrounding highlands.

Many of the trees here are almond, olive and citrus and a new pine plantation was started close to the town some years ago and this has created the first forest in the area for 500 years. This serves to make the area of Huércal Overa a welcome contrast to the mostly barren landscape of the Almería province.

impressive architecture

The religious architecture of this town is impressive. The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was founded in 1505 and the church of the Asunción de la Virgén was built in1748. The chapel of Jesús Nazareno was founded in 1749 and contains a magnificent statue of Jesus carved by Francisco Salzillo.
